Patent

A patent is a legal right granted by the Government of India that gives an inventor the exclusive authority to make, use, sell, or license an invention. It serves as a form of protection that prevents others from producing, using, or selling the patented invention without the inventor’s permission.

In exchange for this exclusivity, the inventor is required to fully disclose the technical details of the invention to the public. This ensures that, once the patent term expires, the knowledge becomes freely available for public use and advancement.

In India, the standard term of a patent is 20 years from the date of filing the application. After this period, the invention enters the public domain, meaning anyone can use it without seeking permission from the former patent holder.

Patents can protect entirely new inventions as well as significant improvements to existing technologies, provided they meet the requirements of novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability.
